Veterans Day 2017: What’s Open, Closed In Del Ray

Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, but some city services will change hours to observe the holiday the day before.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Veterans Day (Nov. 11) falls on a Saturday this year, but some services in Alexandria will observe the holiday on Friday. Many will head to work and school anyway, but government offices and other services will take a break for the holiday.

City of Alexandria government offices will be open for Veterans Day, as well as libraries and schools, while services like courts and health facilities will not operate.

Here are the openings/closings to be aware of on Friday, Nov. 10.

City Offices: Open

Schools and Administrative Offices: Open

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open for holiday hours, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Animal visiting hours will begin at noon, and for the extended weekend (November 10 through 12), adoption fees on adult animals will be waived for veterans and activity-duty military personnel.

DASH and King Street Trolley: DASH bus service will operate on a weekday schedule Nov. 10 and 11. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its normal schedule, every 10 to 15 minutes, between the King Street Metro Station and the Potomac River waterfront, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight on Nov. 10 and 11. Emergency hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3329 King St.) will be closed on Nov. 10. The Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King St.) will be open during normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking: Police will enforce parking restrictions Nov. 10 but suspend enforcement Nov. 11 at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits. It does not apply to permit parking in any location normally prohibited (parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Recreation and Arts Centers: Open

State Offices: The following Commonwealth of Virginia offices in Alexandria will be closed on Nov. 10: Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King St. and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office on 2681 Mill Road.
